Spring 2012 Programs:
The deadline to apply is Monday, January 30, 2012 by 12pm CST.
Program #1: Safe Messages ~ Using graphic design to deter crime & violence in our communities, with Lead Artist Melissa DeBuck
Are you a positive change maker? Want to positively influence your community against crime & violence? While adults do a lot of hard work to deter young people from going down the wrong path, we believe messages created by young people and for young people will be much more effective in encouraging positive change.
Under the direction and planning of the Lead Artist, Interns will:
1. Learn about crime and violence issues that face the 53204 neighborhood (where ArtWorks is physically located) through internet research, advice solicited from a community leader in your neighborhood, and personal experience sharing, all organized by the Lead Artist.
2. Based on themes of information that the Interns identify, they will pick an anti-crime/violence topic from an identified list (Gangs, Guns, Drugs, Youth Violence, etc.)
3. The Interns will work as a team to brainstorm ideas to design various images and slogans to combat the theme they selected, with the audience being their peers and younger youth in the community.
4. These designs will then be used to create a series of print-ready crime intervention posters at the Art Institute’s design lab during a series of 8 Friday night visits. These posters will be printed and distributed to locations throughout the city that serve youth.
The Safe Messages posters will be unveiled and reproductions will be sold at an open-house event at ArtWorks at April 20, 2012, as part of the city’s Gallery Night event. Interns will be paid to work at this event.

Program #2: The Positive Influence Project, with Lead Artist Nicole Lesser
Positive things are happening in every community in Milwaukee, but too often the public hears only about the problems that may exist.
This spring, Intern Artists will be asked to identify a “person of positive influence” from their neighborhood. The idea is to pick someone who doesn’t get a lot of recognition for the positive work they do int heir community. First, Interns will approach this person and formally ask them if they would be the subject of their mixed-media portrait. Interns will also learn several basic visual arts techniques (drawing, painting, collage, etc.) that they can apply to their portrait. Then ArtWorks will host a reception for all subject people to attend, where they can share stories about the work they do in their neighborhood. At this reception Interns will interview and photograph their subject so they may design and execute a mixed media portrait of their subject to communicate a positive message about their community.
The Positive Influence Portraits will be unveiled and reproductions will be sold at an open-house event at ArtWorks at April 20, 2012, as part of the city’s Gallery Night event. Interns will be paid to work at this event.

Get Ready To Apply:
1) Have you decided to which program you will apply? *Reminder -- You may only apply to one program; not both.
