Culture Work - Engaging in the history of UMOS (United Migrant Opportunity Services)
Interns are working with students and faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Milwaukee School of Engineering as well as an advisory board of community leaders, engaging in the history of UMOS and “culture work”.
Interns research histories of Wisconsin’s Latino immigrant workers and the 50-year history of UMOS (United Migrant Opportunity Services) through individual interviews and an oral history project.
Interns have conducted oral history interviews, are learning about translating words into images, how to brainstorm design ideas, and paint the mural’s final design. The large-scale mural is currently in progress (see photos below).
