What to Expect from ArtWorks
1. Pay Rates:
In order to qualify for the selection process, Apprentice candidates must be enrolled in a Milwaukee-area high school at the time of the program's start date AND throughout the duration of the program. If you are not in high school, you will not be allowed to participate in our programming.
Selected Apprentices begin each program earning $6.00/hour. At the mid-point of each program Apprentices may be eligible for a pay raise, based on his/her performance.
2. Orientation = Fundamentals Day:
The first day of each program is known as Fundamentals Day. During this day, an ArtWorks representative & the Lead Artist will establish expectations and weekly work goals for the program, as well as collect all required ArtWorks apprentice paperwork (Work Permit, I9 Form, W4, contracts, etc.)
It is the Apprentice’s responsibility to bring all required paperwork to Fundamentals Day, which will be mailed to you in advance. If paperwork is not brought to Fundamentals Day the Apprentice cannot be added to our payroll system and therefore cannot receive wages until all required paperwork has been submitted.
3. Performance Feedback:
The Lead Artist evaluates Apprentice job performance both formally and informally.
* During Week 2 the Lead Artist has an informal conversation with each Apprentice to share his/her thoughts about the Apprentice’s strengths and areas for development.
* During Week 4 each Apprentice sits down with the Lead Artist and ArtWorks staff for a formal performance review. This review is designed to evaluate the level of mastery of the 21st Century employability skills we train, and is based on a 1500-point scale. If an Apprentice earns a minimum of 1000 points or more, they will be eligible to receive a raise of $0.25/hour for the second half of the program.
* During Week 6 the Lead Artist has an informal conversation with each Apprentice to share his/her thoughts about the Apprentice’s strengths and areas for development.
* During Week 8 each Apprentice sits down with the Lead Artist and ArtWorks staff for a final formal performance review, to assess progress made in mastering identified employability skills.
During all performance feedback, Apprentices are encouraged to ask questions and be an active part of the conversation.
Additionally, at the conclusion of each program, Apprentices are asked to evaluate the performance of their Lead Artist, as well as provide feedback about the ArtWorks staff and organization as a whole. ArtWorks uses this information to improve its programs and better serve its future participants.
4. Uniforms:
Apprentices will receive ArtWorks T-shirts to wear as uniforms at no cost, and they are required to wear the ArtWorks T-shirts during all work hours.
